Scorzonera – black root, snake murder. Requires deeply cultivated, fertile sandy or sandy loam soil. It is sensitive to acidification and fresh lime. It is grown in the second year after manure. Before cultivating, in the fall, it is necessary to dig the soil to a depth of 30…50 cm. In spring it is sown directly to a permanent place, in rows every 20…30 cm and stops every 5…8 cm. After knocking out the inflorescence, the root becomes fibrous, but when the shoot is cut and new leaves are knocked out, it becomes edible again. The roots are long and brittle, therefore harvesting is difficult. Roots are dug up after rain or watering, using a fork or shovel. Harvesting takes place at the turn of October and November, and even through the winter, if the soil is not frozen.
Sowing date: end of III…beginning of IV.
Variations: Annual Giants, Duplex, Black Peter.
