Straw mats – warming the hive

Hive straw mats.
To ensure the best wintering conditions for bees in the described hive, the side walls of the nest are insulated with straw mats, while excluding the use of soft fibreboards or other insulating materials. The mats in the nest part do not reach the bottom. This ensures good ventilation, makes it possible to use a dirt liner in winter and a mesh liner to combat varroosis.

Performance Notes (collected by points consistent with the numbers of mat elements listed in the table red slomiana eyesand in the drawing.

The order of assembly of elements. The mat skeleton collapses, except for the four side blades 39 on the one hand. If the side slats break (even when hammering dull nails) it is advisable to drill holes (a nail can be used as a drill). Side slat nailing should be of length 25, which will prevent them from being pulled out by the springy straw layer. Before inserting the straw mat into the frame (not threshed, but without ears), it needs to be combed out of the weeds, leaves and leaf sheaths. For combing, you can use a comb made of a board, two rows of nails, approx. 100 in increments (in a row) ok. 15. Second row (distant from the first approx. 10) the nails are shifted from the first row by half the distance between the nails in the row, i.e.. The 7,5. The finished comb can be attached to a table or bench, which will allow you to brush the straw bundle held in both hands. You can also make a handle from the board of the comb and comb a bundle of straw held in one hand.

The straw is placed in the mat skeleton in small bundles, alternately, i.e.. so, that the thicker and thinner ends form an even layer on both ends of the mat. So much straw is laid, that it is well pressed after nailing the remaining side slats and does not bend these slats. To avoid cracking of the horizontal battens 38 it's good, to make the extreme nails fastening the side slats thinner and shorter (e.g. length 15. After breaking, you usually have to manually clean the surface of the mat from leaf sheaths. Excess straw, protruding on both sides of the border, it is best to cut it off with a sharp knife-saw (e.g. commonly used to cut bread)
