Tea roses
This breed comes from the tea rose, Rosa odorata Sweet, brought from the Far East at the beginning of the last century.. This species was a real revelation at that time. He was very abundant, flowering and shapely throughout the summer, beautiful flowers with a pleasant, intoxicating smell, reminiscent of the smell of tea (hence the name). Tea rose was an excellent material for breeders for numerous crosses, which immediately began to be carried out. As a result of extensive breeding work, approx 600 varieties, very glamorous, with an extremely wide range of colors and a strong fragrance. They all had a great disadvantage, however: they were sensitive to frost, which was a major obstacle to their dissemination. This feature just caused, that they were soon withdrawn from production and - in the normal course of fate - fell into the shadows. They stayed under glass for the longest time; they were mainly their long shoot forms, like Marechal Niel, Glory of Dijon, Nephews. Especially the first one is associated with our great-grandmothers in crinolines, decorated with yellow, exquisite shaped flowers of a truly tea rose. They also gained great popularity: Mom Cochet, Grace Darling, Blumenschmidt, White Maman Cochet, Lady Hillingdon.
Tea roses played a great role in breeding, contributing to the creation of the most valuable and dominant today in the group of large-flowered roses - a race of tea hybrids.
