The suitability of a site for an orchard is determined not only by its shape. The quality of the soil is no less important (also its deeper layers).
Areas with a high level of groundwater are unsuitable for the cultivation of fruit plants. If you do not want to give up planting an orchard in a wetland, you need to drain it. Depth, on which the drains should run has not yet been strictly defined. A healthy appearance and good yielding of many orchards growing in fields drained to a depth commonly used in agriculture, this is 120-130 cm, they indicate, that deeper drainage in orchards is not necessary. It is not advisable to drain too wet areas with open ditches, because they hinder the journeys in the orchard. In multi-species orchards, plants of each species are planted in separate quarters.
Also within individual species, varieties with a similar ripening time are grouped together, which enables rational control of diseases and pests and facilitates the performance of other works.
