Proper screw in, especially in hardwood, requires a special pilot hole. You can saw a feather drill from a piece of stiff flat bar, which will drill the appropriate hole in one pass. In this drill bit, the lower part drills a hole for the thread of the screw, the middle under its spindle, and the upper one, conical for the conical head of the screw. With such a drill it is easy to make holes in soft types of wood, as well as plastics.
